Georgia Swimming Fall Meeting

10/1 - Business at the Georgia Swimming Fall Meeting last weekend was brisk and substantial. By the conclusion of the House of Delegates Sunday we had next year's budget (which included a few spending cuts and fee increases in light of the current economy), established next year's long course meet schedule, and established new time standards. For the schedule, the Age Group State meet will be the 2nd weekend in July in Augusta, Senior Circuit the third weekend, and Senior State, since it will no longer be the Zone selection meet, will move to the final weekend in July during Zones. The 15-18 zone team will be selected in Spring based on short-course times. Both championship meets will have tightened time standards which should be out by year's end.

Georgia Banquet Recognizes All-Stars

nickAt the All-Star Banquet last weekend over 200 of Georgia Swimming's top athletes were recognized at the Atlanta Hilton Northeast. The All-Star towels were handed out while the athletes heard from guest speaker and National Team member Nick Thoman. In addition GCAT's Bill Forrester was named Senior Coach of the Year while Dynamo's Jon Beber was named Age Group Coach of the Year. Sadly neither the Betsy Dunbar nor the Bill Young scholarships were awarded due to lack of nominations. Each year Georgia swimming members (or their parents!) are encouraged to submit nominees for the two awards during the summer. The Bill Young award goes to the top graduating senior nominee based on both swimming and non-swimming achievements. The Betsy Dunbar goes to a graduating college swimmer who has continued to participate in Georgia meets during college.

Long Course Recap

8/30/09 - Now that all the long course meets have ended and results uploaded to the national database we're able to take a look at the successes of the past season within the LSC. Let's start with two new American Records, set by SwimAtlanta's Amanda Weir and ABSC's Mary Descenza, at the World Champs in Rome in July (you might also note ex pat Eric Shanteau's records in the 100 and 200 breast...I'm just saying). We also had some national age group record breakers. Seth Beer (left) from SwimAtlanta broke the national 11-12 boys records in both the 50 and 100 back at Age Group State and Zones. The 13-14 girls' 800 free relay from Dynamo Swim Club of Taylor Schick, Nicole Stafford, Jamie Christy, and Hayley Durmer broke that national record at Senior State Champs. In addition the 11-12 boys relay of Beer, Brandon Gross, Alfonso Castillo and Jake Williams from SwimAtlanta surpassed the record in that event but have not yet been confirmed by USAS.

Also this season, numerous state records were broken. You can view the new records, as well as meet results and the season's Top 20, using the link below. The Top 20 list is generated three times each year and lists the 2o fastest swim in each event in the 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 age groups.
